THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRANSLATION AND CYBERSECURITY

by Djenny Floro

Cybersecurity breaches are now the biggest threat any company faces. The loss or the wrong manipulation of data can cost companies millions of dollars or their entire business altogether. Cybersecurity includes the protection of companies’ data, computer systems and the detection of intrusions. But the roles of translation and languages have often been ignored to achieve cybersecurity goals. For example, determining the language of the user, understanding the contents of emails or other documents can greatly improve cybersecurity.

What is Cybersecurity?

It includes monitoring systems, computers, data and programs to detect threats in addition to developing tools and methods to respond to these threats in real time.
The intrusion can be as simple as a Trojan horse sent in a seemingly innocent attachment. Once the malware has infected the system, the data will not be secured. This technique has been used to acquire passwords, gain access to systems and has successfully brought large companies down and cost them millions of dollars.

The international nature of the Internet

The Internet is international and multilingual in nature. While almost half of the internet users are in Asia, the most common language on the Internet is English. Also many users use two languages in their geographical region, in their daily lives, their spoken languages or even written messages and emails.

How does translation contribute to cyber security?

Language is the medium of communication for cybercrime. All criminal groups establish some sort of trust among members and usually have their own cues. By understanding the importance of translation, breaches can be detected. Translation makes is it easier to understand how cybercrime groups work and who is involved. While accessing emails is not easy, translation can greatly help security systems identify cyberattacks, especially the ones that are originating in another part of the world.
Language is also used to spread information that may or may not be harmful. In the Arab Spring, the social media was the platform where activists gathered in many countries. Understanding their language and what they were up to helped in making the picture clear.

How is the internet changing languages?

For easy access and use, the Internet has forced users of languages other than English to resort to using Latin letters to write and communicate. The Internet has helped in combining dialects, idioms and alphabets. In Arabic-speaking countries, many users resort to using Latin letters for their communication purposes, writing Arabic words in English letters. To compensate for the missing Arabic sounds, numbers are used to write the word as it is pronounced in Arabic. This only started with the wide use of the Internet in the Arab world. Understanding such newly invented techniques can help cybersecurity achieve its purposes.

What is the importance of translation?

Translating word for word can have a lot of negative effects. It is very important to understand the message and the meaning the sentence conveys. Studies and actual events show that attackers can stay undetected for a long time, while an attack will take several days to be resolved, which could cause a huge loss. The successful translation of all data available can help companies to detect and respond to breaches in a timelier manner.
